You’ve probably noticed that I’m using the diabetic cookbook a lot these days… well diabetes runs in the family so I thought I’d better start eating in a better manner to help prevent it from happening here in my own home… plus the recipes have turned out pretty tasty overall so why not! Here’s a recipe from the Complete Canadian Diabetic Cookbook, page 215, for some really tasty burgers. I will definitely make these again – and you don’t need anything besides the bun on these burgers they are so tasty.

  • 1lb lean ground beef
  • 1/4 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/4 cup chopped green onions (I used red onions instead)
  • 3 tbsp chopped coriander or parsley  (I used 1-1/2 tbsp ground coriander)
  • 2 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 2 tsp minced garlic
  • 1 tsp minced gingerroot (I used ground ginger)
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 2 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame oil (I used canola oil)

INSTRUCTIONS (paraphrased)

  1. mix everything (except last 3 ingredients) in a bowl as if making meatloaf
  2. form burgers (should make 4-5 total)
  3. mix together the 3 last ingredients in a small bowl and brush over the burgers
  4. place on grill or into pan with a rack in 450F oven and bake 10-15 minutes- turn once and brush with more sauce (I didn’t turn the burgers and I baked them about 20-25 minutes and they were super moist and cooked through)
